About Detweiller Park Forest Preserve

Detweiller Park Forest Preserve is one of the largest and most popular forest preserves managed by the Peoria Park District, located northwest of Peoria, Illinois. This preserve covers over 2,000 acres of diverse terrain including forested hills, open meadows, creeks, and man-made lakes such as Lake Detweiller. The preserve provides a habitat for a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, songbirds, and native plants, making it a favored spot for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers. Historically, the area was enlisted as a public recreational space in the early 20th century and has since grown to become a hub for outdoor recreation in central Illinois. Major attractions include hiking and equestrian trails, mountain biking paths with technical features, a seasonal campground, and fishing and paddle sports opportunities on Lake Detweiller. The preserve hosts several picnic areas and a nature center that offers educational programs and events. Visitors appreciate the balance of well-maintained trails combined with opportunities for solitude in the natural setting. Detweiller Park is also known for its volunteer-driven efforts to maintain and improve the trail system and wildlife habitats. The diversity of recreational options and the ease of access make this a year-round destination for both families and outdoor sports enthusiasts.
